THE WOODLANDS TRUCK ACCIDENTS

The Woodlands Truck & 18-Wheeler Accident Lawyer

Maida Law Firm represents people hurt in 18-wheeler and commercial truck crashes in The Woodlands, from our Houston office on the Southwest Freeway; we have no Woodlands office. The Woodlands sits on I-45 North, and TxDOT’s Houston truck study found that the I-45 gateway near Spring carries more commercial vehicle traffic than any other gateway into the region.

Most of The Woodlands is in Montgomery County, where commercial vehicles were involved in 674 crashes in 2025 (TxDOT). A claim must be filed within two years (Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.003). The consultation is free: call (713) 785-9484.

I-45 NORTH & SH 242

Where do 18-wheeler crashes happen in The Woodlands?

On I-45 North above all, the interstate freight route between Houston and Conroe that runs along the east side of The Woodlands. TxDOT’s freight plan counted 10,000 or more trucks a day on I-45 from Houston to Conroe in 2011. On May 4, 2026, an 18-wheeler overturned after colliding with another vehicle on northbound I-45 near SH 242.

The busiest truck gateway. TxDOT’s Houston District Truck Mobility Study found that the I-45 gateway near Spring “carries the most commercial vehicle traffic of any gateway” into the Houston region (TxDOT, Truck Mobility Study, 2020, 2017 data). The earlier I-45 Freight Corridor Plan treats the stretch from FM 1960 to SH 242 as a 13-mile segment through The Woodlands and Conroe, and counted average daily truck volumes of 10,000 or more from Houston to Conroe (TxDOT, I-45 Freight Corridor Plan, 2016, 2011 data).

The SH 242 crash. On May 4, 2026, The Woodlands Fire Department reported that an 18-wheeler crashed with another vehicle on northbound I-45 near Highway 242 and overturned; two people in the other vehicle were evaluated at the scene and the truck driver was taken to hospital (FOX 26, May 4, 2026). We do not know what caused it and do not speculate.

AFTER A WOODLANDS CRASH

Who investigates a truck crash in The Woodlands, and where is the case filed?

The Woodlands is not a city, so law enforcement is a county responsibility: the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office patrols the township, with Texas DPS on the highways. A lawsuit over a crash in the Montgomery County part goes to the county’s district courts in Conroe; a crash in the Harris County part goes to Houston.

Who responds. The Woodlands Township says law enforcement is a county responsibility and that it partners with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 4, for supplemental services (The Woodlands Township). The Sheriff’s District 6 primarily patrols the township, roughly 44 square miles, from 9200 Grogan’s Mill Road; District 2 surrounds it and includes the Rayford/Sawdust Road and I-45 corridor (Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office). DPS Highway Patrol’s Conroe office is at #2 Hilbig, Conroe. Whichever agency responds writes the crash report, which TxDOT sells online for $6, or $8 certified.

Treatment. Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, 9250 Pinecroft Drive, describes itself as a designated Level II trauma center with a 457-bed main hospital (Memorial Hermann). Houston’s two Level I trauma centers are in the Texas Medical Center.

The court. Montgomery County’s district courts sit in Conroe, at the Montgomery County Courthouse, 207 West Phillips, and at 301 North Main, where the District Clerk’s office is in Suite 103 (Montgomery County district courts; District Clerk). A crash on the Harris County side of The Woodlands goes to the Harris County Civil Courthouse, 201 Caroline Street, Houston. The federal trucking rules and Texas damages law are explained on our Houston truck and 18-wheeler accident page and our truck accident settlement page; for other injuries in the township, see our Woodlands personal injury page.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What do people ask about truck accidents in The Woodlands?

Buy the Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Report (CR-3) through TxDOT’s online Crash Report Online Purchase System: $6 for a regular copy, $8 certified. It is written by whichever agency responded, usually the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office or Texas DPS on I-45, and TxDOT releases it to the people involved and their representatives.

Not before you have spoken to a lawyer and your treatment is under way. The insurer’s adjuster works for the carrier, and a statement taken while you are still in pain or on medication is often quoted back later to minimise the injury or shift fault. You can decline politely and ask them to put questions in writing.

It depends on why the truck lost control: the driver’s speed or following distance, the carrier’s maintenance or scheduling, a load that was badly secured by the shipper, or a defective part. Each can be a separate defendant. Engine data, the logbook and the load documents usually show which it was.

It depends on which county the crash happened in. Most of The Woodlands is in Montgomery County, whose district courts sit in Conroe at 207 West Phillips and 301 North Main. The southern part is in Harris County, where suits go to the Civil Courthouse at 201 Caroline Street in Houston. We confirm the county from the exact crash location.

Generally two years from the crash under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.003(a), or two years from the date of death in a fatal case. If a county or other governmental vehicle was involved, written notice is required within six months under § 101.101.

Yes, as long as your share of responsibility is not greater than 50 percent (Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 33.001); your damages are reduced by your percentage. In a lane-change or merge crash at an I-45 interchange, the truck’s dashcam and engine data usually settle the percentage, so they are requested early.

What matters is experience with truck cases and the resources to preserve carrier evidence quickly, not the office address. Texas lawyers practise statewide. We handle Woodlands cases from our only office, 8313 Southwest Fwy Ste 102, Houston, TX 77074, and meet clients by phone, video or in person; we have no Woodlands office.

Yes, through a wrongful-death claim filed within two years of the death (Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.003(b)). After a fatal crash, federal rules require the carrier to test the surviving driver for alcohol and drugs (49 C.F.R. § 382.303). Our wrongful death page explains who may bring the claim.

What else do people ask after a truck crash in The Woodlands?

Tap a question to open it.

Why are there so many 18-wheelers on I-45 between Spring and Conroe?

Because I-45 is the main interstate freight route north from Houston toward Dallas. TxDOT’s Houston truck study found the I-45 gateway near Spring carries the most commercial vehicle traffic of any gateway into the region (2017 data), and TxDOT’s I-45 freight plan counted 10,000 or more trucks a day between Houston and Conroe in 2011.

What should I do at the scene of a truck wreck on I-45?

Stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on if it is not safe to get out, call 911, and let deputies and medics come to you. When it is safe, photograph the truck, its company name and the scene, and collect witnesses’ names. Get medical care the same day and keep every record.

How do I stop the trucking company from erasing the black box and dashcam?

By sending a written preservation demand to the carrier as early as possible, identifying the truck, the date and the data: the engine or event data recorder, the electronic logging device, dashcam video, dispatch messages and the driver’s file. If the carrier refuses, a court can be asked to order it. Much of this data is kept only for limited periods.

What trucking violations come up most in I-45 crashes?

We do not rely on a general list; each case is checked against its own records. The questions we ask first are whether the driver was within the federal driving-hour limits, whether the carrier ran the post-crash drug and alcohol tests federal rules require, whether the truck was maintained, and whether the load was secured.

Does a Woodlands truck crash case go to Conroe?

If it happened in the Montgomery County part of The Woodlands, it is ordinarily filed in the Montgomery County district courts in Conroe. The southern edge of The Woodlands lies in Harris County, and a crash there goes to the Harris County Civil Courthouse in Houston. The exact crash location decides which.

Where will I be treated after a serious truck crash in The Woodlands?

Emergency crews decide. Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center on Pinecroft Drive is a designated Level II trauma center, and Houston’s two Level I trauma centers, Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center and Ben Taub Hospital, are in the Texas Medical Center. Every visit should be documented from the first day.

How much is a Woodlands truck accident case worth?

It depends on the injuries, the proof of fault, your own share of responsibility and the insurance behind each defendant. Texas limits medical damages to amounts actually paid or incurred and requires lost earnings to be shown after income tax. Our truck accident settlement page sets out every rule that moves the number.

How much does it cost to hire a lawyer for a Woodlands truck case?

Nothing up front. Maida Law Firm works on a contingency fee: a percentage of the recovery, set out in writing before you sign, and no attorney’s fee if there is no recovery. We handle Woodlands cases from our Houston office on the Southwest Freeway and can meet by phone or video.
