Where Do 18-Wheeler Crashes Happen in Sugar Land?
Sugar Land sits at the junction of several corridors that carry heavy commercial truck traffic: the I-69/US-59 Southwest Freeway, the SH-99 Grand Parkway (which TxDOT’s Segment D runs roughly 17.4 miles from US-59 in Sugar Land to I-10 near Katy), US-90A, and the Highway 6 arterial. Local news coverage over the past several years has documented 18-wheeler crashes on each of these roads. We are not claiming any one of them is statistically the city’s most dangerous — that would require TxDOT crash-record analysis we have not performed — only that each has a documented history of commercial truck incidents.
The I-69/US-59 & University Boulevard interchange, near the Smart Financial Center, has appeared repeatedly in local truck-crash reporting: on October 24, 2023, an 18-wheeler hauling watermelons struck a highway sign on I-69 northbound at University Boulevard at roughly 3:51 a.m., closing multiple lanes for more than six hours (ABC13, October 2023). In January 2018, a three-vehicle crash at the same US-59/University Boulevard interchange sent a jackknifed big rig off the overpass onto a car below; remarkably, everyone survived and the driver of the struck vehicle was treated for non-life-threatening injuries (ABC13, January 2018).
Further north, where US-59 meets the Grand Parkway, an 18-wheeler hauling gravel overturned on the northbound US-59 frontage road at SH-99 on July 17, 2025, spilling its load and closing the northbound frontage lanes (KPRC Click2Houston, July 2025). And on US-90A at Easton Avenue, a train collided with an 18-wheeler on August 28, 2026, causing a diesel spill that Fort Bend County HazMat had to contain and closing multiple intersections for hours; Sugar Land Police reported no major injuries (KPRC Click2Houston, August 2026). That crash is a reminder that US-90A carries both truck traffic and active Union Pacific rail lines through the city.
These crashes involved rollovers, jackknifing, cargo spills and a rail collision — different mechanisms, at different points along the same handful of corridors. The collision caused a diesel spill that Fort Bend County HazMat responded to and contained, and Sugar Land Police closed several intersections — including routes near Constellation Field — for several hours while crews worked. Police reported no major injuries (KPRC Click2Houston). It is a reminder that US-90A carries both truck traffic and active Union Pacific rail lines through Sugar Land, and that a truck crash case can also raise railroad-crossing and hazardous-materials issues.
